When I say 2012 Doomsday , I'm not referring to the movie by John Cussack, but to the actual event itself that many scientists believe will happen on December 21, 2012. Some experts say that on that day, the world will totally end, while others believe that it will be a start of a "new world". Alright, That's just about the same reaction that I had had when I first heard it, so on the next paragraphs, we'll discuss more of it and let's trace where this issue started.

Who are the Mayans?

2012 and doomsday have always been associated with each other because of the calendar that the early Maya Civilization created. Before we discuss the details of the calendar I'd like to introduce to you the Mayans, especially for those who are new to this topic. Well, If NASA existed before, they would have probably occupied the office seats.

The Maya civilization was an advanced civilization who had a very precise understanding of our solar system's cycles. Most of them were astronomers and mathematicians. They lived in the region which is now the eastern and southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras. The Mayans developed a system of writing using hieroglyphs and built massive stone pyramids, temple and sculptures. Just recently, archaeologists have found highly developed cities, sophisticated art, and examples of Mayan writings.

What does the Mayan calendar tell us?

So why is this Mayan calendar very intriguing that it's actually all over the internet and a movie about 2012 doomsday has been made? To be honest, it's really confusing and I didn't really bother to know all the details. Just try googling for the keyword "Mayan Calendar" and you'll see what I mean, you'll be overwhelmed by the information you'll get, so overwhelming that there's a lot of debate going on.

But the general idea is that the The Maya thought that the world was created and destroyed 3 times and we are in the latest creation. Mayan calendar is so accurate that it predicted all of the eclipses that was going to happen from their time to the day they thought our "current" world will end.

They believed that for the first time in about 26,000 years, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way on the winter solstice in 2012. According to the Mayans, our Sun and all of its planets rotate in cycles in relation to the center of the galaxy and it takes 25,625 years for our solar system to complete that cycle. They called one completion of the cycle a "Galactic day".

They believed that a galactic day has ended in 1999 and we are currently on a transformation period. They believed that another galactic day will start on December 21, 2012. Okay, you might be asking, so what's wrong with that? Isn't that even better that we are to start fresh again? Keep reading.

Well, that may have been good to me if the The Mayans didn't believe that the central sun or light of the galaxy emits a ray of light so intense and so brilliant that it illuminates the entire universe, every 5,125 years. They call this the "pulse of the universe", but wait, there's more! This pulse will last for 20 years which they call a Kat'un.If you think you can survive that, then you will be fine. So there, goodluck to both of us, I hope the mayans are grave wrong. fresh huh?

Doing a 2012 doomsday countdown ?

It's up to you of course if you want to believe it or not, The mayans could be wrong you know? and who knows, this could just be a marketing strategy to boost sales, remember Y2K? Just keep an open mind but don't let 2012 doomsday rumors scare you!

36 “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. 38 For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; 39 and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be. 40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken along and the other be abandoned; 41 two women will be grinding at the hand mill: one will be taken along and the other be abandoned. 42 Keep on the watch, therefore, because YOU do not know on what day YOUR Lord is coming.

43 “But know one thing, that if the householder had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have kept awake and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 On this account YOU too prove yourselves ready, because at an hour that YOU do not think to be it, the Son of man is coming.

Matthew 24:36-43

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, and they are fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct, 20 idolatry, practice of spiritism, enmities, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, contentions, divisions, sects, 21 envies, drunken bouts, revelries, and things like these. As to these things I am forewarning YOU, the same way as I did forewarn YOU, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s kingdom.

22 On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Moreover, those who belong to Christ Jesus impaled the flesh together with its passions and desires.

Galatians 5:19-26
