Round Coffee table, a must have for all coffee lovers
62Coffee tables : A brief history
The origin of when and how the existence of a
coffee table came about still remains a debate for many years. Dating back from
the Middle ages to the Victorian Era the popularity of coffee drinking is said
to have spread to the rest of Europe from the Ottoman Empire after the Battle
of Vienna in 1683. The design of the round coffee table was derived from
the tea table. Tea tables, were used throughout Europe as early as the
seventeenth century, were tall, round tables set beside a chair or placed in
front of a group seating arrangement. The tea service could be placed on the
table and served to family and guests.
The idea of these tables
were specifically used for serving hot drinks or putting down one's cup between
sips predates the coffee or tea table. In Britain in 1750 tea drinking was at
the height of fashion and there was increasing demand for tea tables. There
were pillar and claw tripod tea tables with a round top that were later hinged
and were taller than present day coffee tables. There were also examples of tea
or china tables that were rectangular. Other forms of tables in use at this
time which could be placed near to a sofa were called occasional tables, end
tables, and centre tables.
In America, the production of coffee tables increased rapidly in the early twentieth century, and the low, rectangular or round table was marketed to the average homeowner.
The president of the Imperial Furniture Company, one J. Stuart Foote, claimed to have invented the modern day coffee table in 1920. His story was he cut down the legs of a table and when he saw the result it occurred to him that it was suitable for placement in front of the sofa and perfect setting down one's coffee. The idiom "Gather round the coffee table" is derived from the furniture piece referring to its its proclivity for encouraging conviviality and light conversation.
