If you know an adult who stutter, or if you stutter yourself, for sure you know that adult stuttering causes so much stress to the person affected. At this point, the exact cause why some people stutter is yet to be discovered. However, scientists are proposing that there are various factors that influences an adult's susceptibility to stuttering. The most common factors that are associated with stuttering are physchological and neurologic problems. Stress is also being looked at as one of the factors that contribute to stuttering. Others suggest that stuttering can also be acquired if  you have a family member or a relative that stutters. It is very uncommon for adults to stutter, in fact a survey made a couple of years ago shows that there's only 2 in 270 adults who stutter. However, no matter how low is the number of people who stutter, there's absolutely no question that stuttering can cause major problems, disappointment, frustration and even anger to the all the people who suffer from it. Understandably, these people look for stuttering treatment for adults that will end all the embarassment they have to face everytime they talk to other people.

Stuttering treatment for adults

If someone tells you that there's a guaranteed stuttering treatment for adults, don't believe him, he's lying. Try talking to a pathologist and he'll tell you outright that there's no medicinal cure to treat stuttering. I repeat, there is NO medicinal cure to treat stuttering as of this time. However, you don't need to feel discouraged as there are other treatment for stuttering methods that just might help you.

One of the things you can consider is speech therapy for stuttering. You can check with your school/university if there's a speech therapy teacher in your school that can help you. In this method, you'll have to participate in speech therapy activities. There are also some people who have greatly benefited from motivational aspects and exercises, while some do not experience any improvement at all. The best way to find out if it's effective for you is to actually try. It is also very important that you look for the right therapist and build a proper treatment plan with the therapist.

Be warned, you need to know that you'll need to spend a substancial amount of money and time in speech therapy before you can get any improvements in your condition. Just the evaluation alone will cost you $300-$500. A thorough evaluation of your stuttering case is done by a speech pathologist before he or she constructs a treatment plan. So the best thing to do if you're trying to keep cost low is to ask her first how much she charges before undergoing the therapy. Keep in mind that it may take some time before you actually see some results, do not expect to stop stuttering after your first therapy or else you'll just end up disappointed.

If you can not afford the cost of speech therapy, you may try reading out loud and observe where you're having difficulties and try to work on it. There are some people who take yoga classes. The reason is that yoga teaches you how to regain control over your body and how to relax your nerves. If you are relaxed and anxiety-free you will notice a big difference in the way you speak. Lastly, try to get some rest and sleep. Notice how you tend to stutter if you lack sleep?

Again there's no stuttering treatment for adults that is guaranteed 100% to work. The trick is to try different methods to see what will be most effective for you and stick with it.
