Stuttering or stammering in children usually begins somewhere around the age of three but many parents do not notice it until the child who stutters reach 6 years old as that's the time when stuttering symptoms really start to appear. You'll be surprised to know that even with the super advanced technology that we have these days, what causes stuttering children is yet to be found by scientists. They are still trying to figure out what exactly is causing the problem. However they believe that there are plenty of factors that trigger this speech disorder. What they're looking at today is genetics and the unwanted malfunction of the mechanisms that is responsible for the speech production in the brain, muscles and nerves. Stuttering may also be caused by anxiety, environment and other problems. The good thing is that in some children, stuttering stops as they get older. In other cases, a child needs to undergo some treatment or therapy before they can get rid of stuttering.
If your child is already in school, you may want to check with the school admin or principal if there's a speech therapist who works with students who have stuttering problems. One of the things they would teach your child is how to take the time and think out the words that are to be said before speaking. A child who stutters also needs to relax when talking as the stuttering tends to get worse if they're under pressure. That's why teasing a child who stutters while speaking is not really a good thing to do.
There are certain situations that can cause stuttering not just to kids, but also to adults. One of theses situations is excitement.
How do you know if you child is really stuttering? What are the symptoms of stuttering? Here are the most common
- Your child shows signs of being afraid to speak.
- She pronounces some sounds in an elongated way like "I wannnnnaaaa go to bed"
- She or he consitently repeats some specific syllable
- She substitutes vowels such as "I want to wuh-wuhsh my feet".
- She changes the pitch and/or the tone if she's having a difficulty pronouncing a word.
Not too many people stutter their way to adulthood. Kids who previously had stutering problems either have had outgrown the dilemma or had to go undergo a speech therapy for stuttering or other treatment for stuttering to get rid of the problem. The best thing to do if your kid or someone in your family is stuttering is to consult with a speech pathologist or someone who has a wide experience in stuttering. It's not a bad idea to ask your friends if they know some trusted stuttering specialists in your area.
