What Causes Vaginal Odor

To stop vaginal odor , it is very important that we know the causes of vaginal odor. In other words, you need to know the problem before you can formulate a solution. You also need to know that it is very normal that your vagina has a certain odor sometimes. If you notice any recent difference in the smell, It doesn’t mean that it is an automatic infection, it could be linked to any specific moment of your menstrual cycle. Don’t forget the smell of your vagina can vary sometimes so there is no need to panic everytime you notice an odor change.

However, you may want to give extra attention if the odor that your vagina produces is no longer pleasant at all. (if it smells like an onion or if it smells like a strong dead fish - that is definitely not good and certainly not tolerable, specially to your partner).

Below are some of the factors that are commonly associated with vaginal odor.

  • Trichomoniasis – Is an infection with the protozoan Trichomonia Vaginalis that is a very common reason for vaginal odor. It is a sexually transmitted disease that causes a malodorous, yellow-greenish vaginal discharge in women.

  • Yeast infections - This is a very common infection that causes foul vaginal odor. This is very common in women during their reproductive years. This infection is caused by the overgrowth of yeast in vagina called Candidiasis or Candida Albica and occurs when the balance of good bacteria in the vagina is disrupted.

  • Bacterial Vaginosis – You may have this if your vaginal discharge is accompanied with a very strong “fishy’ odor. This is caused by an imbalance of normal protective vaginal flora.

Other causes of vaginal odor are Chlamydia, Genital Herpes, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and last but not the least, lack of feminine hygiene.

How To Get Rid of Vaginal Odor

If you think that the foul vaginal odor is caused by an infection. Then it’s best to see a doctor so you can get a prescription and a medical advice on what to do about vaginal odor. Your physician will probably give you an antibiotic if the odor is caused by an infection. The things that you can however at home to help prevent or stop vaginal odor are:

  • Wear loose cotton all the time to help lessen or remove the odor. Your vagina needs to breathe, wearing leather g-strings and synthetic material thongs isn’t a good idea if you have a foul vaginal odor.
  • Eating less meat products and more vegetables and fruit have a very good effect on vaginal odor
  • Don’t use harsh chemicals for your vagina
